Shelf - Care or self care?

Shelf - Care or self care?

I know you are all committed to your self-care . It’s part of your daily life to keep you in tip top physical and mental condition.

But do you just accept that you’ve got where you want to be and sort of let things settle down only to realise that you’ve slipped into some bad habits or you’re not feeling too good?

You may have become an avid reader of self-help books to help with healthy eating, mindfulness or the latest exercise trend. But after a while do you find that those books find their way onto the shelf to stay there gathering dust? Forgotten and more like shelf help than self-help.

It’s a common problem as we are bombarded with so much information and sorting it becomes a chore. We become overwhelmed with it and for many people (me included) I reach a certain point and procrastination sets in. It just becomes too daunting to deal with and the books stay gathering dust and the shelf gets weighed down!

So, I’d like to share my tips on focusing on the appropriate self-care books for you:

  1. Decide which areas you need to focus on as far as your self-care is concerned and look for a book on that topic.
  2. If you find other books during your search note them down, title and author for future. I find it’s always useful to give these books a score out of 10 as to how much I want to read them. Then go back to your original search.
  3. Having selected and purchased your book commit to reading it- make whatever notes you want, or bookmark pages.
  4. When you’ve finished the book make a decision- will you read or refer back to this book? If yes keep it, if not give it to a friend or a charity or resell.
  5. When you start searching for your next book check your list first- saves time and distraction!!
  6. Only have one book on the go at a time so you focus on that one.
  7. Lastly, have a look at your shelf, go through all those books and see which ones have been superseded and give away or resell. That makes room for your next treasure!
